Questions Regarding Booth Space

Why did Canyon Farmers Market create a two-space limit for vendors?

The two-space limit was adopted as part of a broader effort before this year’s season to formalize and strengthen Canyon Farmers Market policies. Before the 2026 market season, the board reviewed its existing rules and looked at policies and procedures used by farmers markets in other communities across the country. As part of that process, the board identified several areas where clearer, more consistent policies would help the market operate fairly and sustainably. The two-space limit was one of the policies adopted through that broader review and is in line with the policies of other farmers markets across the country.

Was this rule created because of one particular vendor?

No. The rule was adopted as a market-wide policy and applies equally to all vendors. While the policy may have affected some vendors differently based on how much space they had used in the past, it was not written for or applied to one specific business. The same two-space limit applies to every vendor participating in the market.

Why does the market need a limit on the number of spaces a vendor can use?

The board has a responsibility to manage the market as a whole, both for current vendors and for its long-term health. Limiting vendors to two spaces helps the market:
-Provide opportunities for a variety of vendors
   -Use available market space fairly
-Avoid having too much of the market occupied by any single vendor
-Maintain flexibility as new vendors want to participate
-Apply a clear and consistent standard to everyone
The goal is not to limit the success of individual vendors. It is to balance the needs of individual businesses with the needs of the market as a whole.

Why make the change if only one vendor was using more than two spaces?

Good policies are intended to guide how the market operates going forward. As the board formalized its policies, it considered what standards would make sense for a growing market over time. A policy does not need to affect several vendors immediately to be appropriate. Establishing the rule now provides a consistent standard for existing and future vendors.

Was a vendor asked to leave Canyon Farmers Market?

No. While one vendor left, they were welcome to continue participating under the same two-space limit that applies to other vendors. Farmers market representatives also discussed ways to help address the practical challenges created by reducing that vendor’s footprint, including options that could make restocking during the market easier. The vendor ultimately chose not to participate under the new policy.

Can the board make an exception?

Making an exception for one vendor would undermine the purpose of having a market-wide policy. The board believes rules should be clear and applied consistently. Allowing some vendors to operate under different space limits based on their previous arrangements could make the policy difficult to apply fairly, now and in the future.

Does this mean the board does not value larger vendors?

No. Canyon Farmers Market values the businesses, growers, producers and community members who make the market successful. The two-space policy is not a judgment about the value of any individual vendor. It is an operating policy intended to balance vendor opportunity, available space and the long-term needs of the market.

How did the board decide on two spaces? The two-space limit was developed during a broader review of farmers market policies and procedures. The board looked at how other markets address vendor space, market layout and related operating issues, then considered what approach made sense for Canyon Farmers Market. The resulting policy established two spaces as the standard maximum for vendors.

Are all vendors required to follow the same rules?

Yes. Canyon Farmers Market policies apply to all participating vendors. One of the reasons for formalizing the market’s policies was to create clearer expectations and more consistent standards for everyone.

Can market policies change in the future? Yes. Like any organization, Canyon Farmers Market may periodically review its policies as the market grows and circumstances change. Any future changes should be considered based on what is best for the market as a whole and applied consistently to participating vendors.

What is the board trying to accomplish with these changes?

The board’s goal is to support a farmers market that is fair, welcoming and sustainable for the long term. Formalizing policies gives vendors clearer expectations, helps the board make consistent decisions and creates a stronger framework for managing the market as it continues to grow.
